Midlothian, Virginia

Midlothian, VA

The area we know as Midlothian, Virginia, has been lived on for thousands of years. It was first inhabited by Native Americans, The Monacan, and Powhatan Tribes. The French Huguenots arrived here after 1700 to get away from religious persecution in France. Coal was discovered in the area in the early 1700s, and the area was first referred to as “ coal mines,” or Coalfield. The area was the first to produce commercially mined coal in 1709, and mining led to the creation of the first railroad system in Virginia.

Today, Midlothian has an eclectic mix of history, centuries-old churches, modern structures, unique shopping, fine dining and more. In 2011, CNBC named it the number 6 perfect suburb in the country. To say that people are smart to live here is an understatement. More than 56% of adults have a college degree, compared to a 22% average for the rest of the country. More people live here whose work is in mathematics and computers than 95% of the US, and almost 90% of the workforce has white-collar jobs.

So, what do the smart folks do here for fun? The number one attraction is Mid-Lothian Mines Park. Nature tours are available as well as ones of the old mines and railroads. Concerts and events are scheduled year-round. The site of the Grove Shaft Mine explosion of 1832 is here, and the grounds are said to have otherworldly presences.

For those that are into ghosts and dining, there are two must-stops. There’s no denying Ruth’s Chris Steak House is one of the best places to eat in the country. The site of the Midlothian location is the Bellgrade Plantation. In 1840, the plantation was purchased by a man named Robiou. He quickly fell in love with his neighbor’s daughter and persuaded her father to allow her to marry. A few weeks after moving her in, Robiou found her in bed with her ex-boyfriend and kicked her out. In a rage, the father murdered Robiou, and shortly after, the daughter fell down the stairs and broke her neck. There have been many reports of their ghosts roaming the property.

Unfortunately closed due to the pandemic, Crab Louie’s served the area for over 250 years. Paranormal events here were the normal. Commonly reported was a man dressed in 19th-century clothing, and especially, a young girl named Rachel. She frequently appeared by table #10 along with the sounds of singing children. Pass the by location, and you still may be able to catch a glimpse.

For real-life thrills, there is Canopy Adventure Park. Try your hand at the rope courses with over 25 features to tackle and ten zip lines. For those daredevils who prefer to get their excitement indoors, try Peak Experiences. It is rock wall climbing at its challenging best.
