Ant Exterminator

There are nearly 1,000 species of ants in North America, and they have unique biologics. They mate and breed differently, have different food preferences, and prefer specific baits at different times of the year. This makes it extremely hard for the average person to control. Using over-the-counter pest control products can cause them to move their nests and make new ones, forcing homeowners to troubleshoot what to do next. Not only are these controls ineffective in penetrating the nest, but many also contain chemicals that are harmful to humans as well.

Social Behavior

When looking at an infestation, it may seem like they are just crawling around wildly with no purpose. However, they are highly social insects with clear roles and hierarchies. There are three types of ants commonly found in a colony, queens, workers, and reproductive. Workers are typically sterile females, and these are the ones you generally see crawling around your home. They are foraging for food to take back to the nest to feed the colony and the larvae. When they find a source, they release pheromones as a call to the rest of the workers to join them. You may see them carrying food items such as tiny pieces of bread, other insects, pet food, and crumbs we leave behind. These workers are also responsible for protecting the nest.

Species In Virginia

Infestations are a big problem in Virginia. They can contaminate food and nest in walls or underneath kitchen sinks. One of the most commonly found is the Carpenter Ant. An infestation typically indicates that there’s a moisture problem in the home or business. They tend to congregate where plumbing leaks can cause wood to become water-laden, like bathrooms, kitchens, laundry areas, water pipes, etc. They can build a nest in old termite galleries where damage already exists.

Also found in Virginia are Pharoah, Argentine, Pyramid, Acrobat, Big-Headed, Tawny Crazy and Fire Ants, to name a few. Some of our species are more than just nuisances; they can inflict venomous stings or painful bites. Fire Ants, in particular, can attack in hordes when threatened. Because of the potential danger, be careful not to step on a mound or disturb a nest if you find one. This is one of the few species that bite and sting. They use their powerful mandibles to grab on and then hit you with the stinger.

Odorous House Ants can be a plague in sheer volume. Their colonies can have many queens, up to 100,000 workers, and eventually become supercolonies. When food is scarce, they can bring their outside nest inside. What makes them tough is they can move their nests every few months. They are attracted to sweets and moisture, and step on a few, and you may get a whiff of rotten coconuts.
